5 Simple Self-Care Tips for Maintaining Sobriety
When you get sober, it’s important that your sobriety and well-being are at the top of your priority list. Sometimes, when people hear this in early sobriety, it’s confusing because they put their drug or alcohol use ahead of everything in their addiction. Now, you may believe that your family and your job have to come first, but it’s important to realize that if you put your self-care on the back burner, you’re risking everything. If you don’t take care of yourself, relapse is right around the corner, so this is why self-care is so important. There’s a balance you can find between friends, family, kids, and work while also making self-care your top priority, and here are some tips.
1. Practice Gratitude
One of the easiest things to implement in your day is gratitude. It’s not time consuming, and it’s something you can do anytime or anywhere. While it’s best to keep a gratitude journal, you can also simply do it mentally. A great idea is to keep a journal and develop a habit of listing three to five things you’re grateful for each morning or each evening. If need be, set a daily reminder in your phone, and if you need to, just pause during your day and think about some things you’re grateful for.
2. Physical Activity
Stay active! Physical activity is one of the best things you can do for your self-care when you get sober. Whether you decide to join a gym or simply go for a walk or a jog each day, it can help with your mental as well as your physical health. You can even do something like yoga in the comfort of your own home.
After you finish treatment, you have the option for aftercare, which may include meeting with your therapist, going to group therapy, or attending 12-step meetings. No matter how busy your life may seem, it’s important to find days where you can attend aftercare. It’s absolutely crucial to continue to be around people who are also trying to stay sober and can assist you on your journey.
4. Stay in Touch
Something simple that you can do each day is contact three people you were in treatment with or who you’ve met in 12-step meetings. These don’t have to be long, intense conversations either. You can make it a habit to send a simple text during the day asking how the person is doing. This helps you get in the habit of checking in on others, and it’s also beneficial to be open and honest with your support group if you’re struggling.
5. Eat Right
Much like physical activity, staying nutritious is a great way to take care of yourself, and it’s a critical form of self-care. You have to eat, so why not intertwine self-care? Eating whole food and organic meals can help heal your body in recovery, and it’ll make you feel great in the process.
