Is it Time to Get a Sponsor?

When you first get sober, whether you go through treatment or start attending meetings, you start hearing about the importance of getting a sponsor. Many people don’t understand what a sponsor is or why you need one if you hope to achieve long-term sobriety. Understanding how a sponsor can help you on your sobriety journey will help you move towards the right direction of getting a sponsor. Before picking a sponsor, it’s important to know if it’s the right time and what to look for when choosing the person who is going to mentor you in your recovery.

Is it Time to Get a Sponsor?

The majority of people who are trying to get sober have tried to get sober before, but something happened that made the person relapse. You might be one of those people who has been able to stay sober for days, weeks or months, but it always results in a relapse. Why does this happen? There are a wide range of reasons as to why people relapse, but one of the primary reasons is because a person continues to run on self-will.

One of the most difficult realizations that any addict or alcoholic has to face is that their best thinking gets them into trouble. Our ego and pride wants to make us believe that we always know what’s best, but when our life keeps heading in the wrong direction, we need to reflect. This is one of the reasons why a sponsor is so crucial to your recovery. In order to stay sober, you need someone who has an outside perspective of what’s going on who can help you start making better decisions that will ultimately lead to you being able to stay sober one day at a time.

How to Find the Right Sponsor

First, it’s important to understand what a sponsor is. There are many misconceptions about what a sponsor does, but their two primary goals are to take you through the AA Big Book or NA Basic Text and to guide you through the steps. That’s it. Now, although they’re two priorities are to take you through the book and the steps, that doesn’t mean that they won’t be there for you when you call. This is another one of their main responsibilities, but the big-picture goal is to help give you the tools you need to stay sober without having to call them.

In the beginning, you’ll be working with your sponsor a lot more than when you build a foundation for your recovery. During this time, you may need to call them once a day to develop the habit of reaching out to someone else in the program to check in. Over time, you’ll also start gaining more phone numbers from other people in the rooms to broaden your support network. You and your sponsor will set up days to meet up as well, and during this time, you’ll work on your steps where you’ll start to develop the wisdom you need to stay clean and sober.

What’s Next?

One of the most beautiful parts of 12-step programs is that it’s just one addict or alcoholic helping another. As you work with your sponsor and complete your steps, you’ll see how it’s saved your life, and you’ll see that you can then help others as well. Once your steps are complete, you’ll be able to sponsor others and help them learn a better way of living as well. Becoming a sponsor is one of the best things that can happen to someone in recovery, and it’s an opportunity you won’t want to miss.
