There are an endless amount of reasons why people begin abusing drugs or alcohol. The primary cause of addiction in the world today is when someone is trying to self-medicate a mental illness. But one of the other major causes of a person’s addiction is the resentment they hold towards the people who have hurt them. Throughout your life, you may have been hurt by your parents, other family members, colleagues, or society in general. Addiction is able to make you believe that the best way to deal with your anger and resentments is to keep drinking or using drugs.
It has been said that holding onto resentments is like drinking poison and hoping the other person dies. We drink or use drugs as a way to punish those who have hurt us, but when we have clarity, we’re able to realize how irrational this is. The disease of addiction tries to justify our drinking and using by saying it will hurt others, but it hurts us more than anyone else. By continuing down this path, life only gets worse, and it can make you even more resentful towards people, places, and institutions. One way it does this is by deflecting blame on the rest of the world.
Splitting the Blame in a Healthy Way
It’s true. Many things that have happened to you that you had no control over. This can be anything from childhood trauma to being the victim of some other form of abuse. What people have done to you is often inexcusable, but the time is now to take control over your life.
